Traces of orientalism in media studies

چکیده
This article is a response to calls for more reflexivity in media scholarship. It argues that despite various attempts towards challenging the ‘Western-centrism’ of field (notable among them ‘de-Westernisation’ project), studies has remained highly captive distinctions between ‘West’ and ‘non-West’ as principal starting point analysis. Building on Edward Said’s concept Orientalism, employing idea methodological self-consciousness, this paper critically assesses often taken-for-granted assumptions research. reflects anecdotal personal experience, observations I have made literature consulted, queries by colleagues, teaching. shows how through which terminology Orientalist discourse materializes reveals network interests shaped any occasion when journalism contexts are deemed ‘non-Western’ question. scholarship marked use binary terminology, collective terms generalities, one-sided relationship ‘non-West’, notions superiority Anglo-American
